About Self-Care and The Four Elements
Finding balance with Earth, Fire, Wind and Water
When I first lived on the Big Island of Hawaii, I explored many different beautiful places. Although the island had an abundance of amazing spots to enjoy, eventually I’d find myself venturing to this one place over and over again. I asked myself what was it about this place that drew me time and time again. One day, when I was there I decided to take some time to be aware of the surroundings and how I was connecting to it. I noticed that the sun was shining, there was a calm breeze keeping me at a pleasant temperature. On the path from my car to the beach, I walked through a Kiawe tree forest and then sat among lava rock at the ocean’s shore. I felt balanced. I could find peace and calm while also being inspired to take a hike through the lava rock along the shoreline, enjoying both activity and stillness in my visits. I felt a sense of wholeness renewed each time I visited this place. It dawned on me that there was a balance of the four elements here and being in an environment with that balance, cultivated the same within me.
When I moved to the Mendocino Coast from Hawaii, I began to note the differences in my exposure to the elements and how it was affecting my overall well-being. As I saw an imbalance, I’d make adjustments and noticed myself feeling centered and grounded again. I felt in harmony with my true essence. My journey helped me appreciate how the four elements flow within us and integrating an awareness of how they are moving can promote wellness, joy, and harmony. I was inspired to create this series to share this realization with others and offer this practice to enhance self-care and experience harmony.
